This Order, instituted by HM Queen Victoria, Empress of India, 31 Dec 1877, and enlarged in 1886, 1887, 1892, 1897, 1902, 1911, 1915, 1920, 1927, and 1939, was conferred for services rendered to the Indian Empire, and consists of the Sovereign, Grand Commanders, Knights Commanders, and Companions.
No appointments to this Order have been made since 14 August 1947.
Instituted by Queen Victoria on 1 January 1878, to commemorate the assumption of the Imperial Title of Empress of India, and revised 14 May 1927, and 18 March 1939, this Order consists of the Sovereign, and of such of the Princesses of Her Majesty’s Royal House, the wives or other female relatives of Indian Princes, and other Indian ladies, and of the wives or other female relatives of any of the persons who held the office of Viceroy and Governor-General of India, Governors of Madras, Bombay, or Bengal, or of Principal Secretary of State for India, or Commander-in-Chief in India.
No appointments to this Order have been made since 14 August 1947.
The Order carries with it no title or precedence, but recipients are permitted to put the initials “CI” after their names, these being placed immediately before “GCVO”.
The Badge of the Order consists of the Royal and Imperial Cypher of Queen Victoria, composed of the letters, V, R and I in diamonds, pearls, and turquoises, encircled by a border set with pearls, ensigned with the Imperial Crown jewelled and enamelled in proper colours, and is worn attached to a light blue watered riband, edged white, of an inch and a half in width, tied in a bow, on the left shoulder. The insignia is returnable at death to the Secretary of the Central Chancery of Orders of Knighthood, by whom the Register of the Order is kept.
