Hugo Strachwitz completed university studies in history, politics and policy in Melbourne,
Australia. Since returning to the UK, he has worked primarily in academia and medical research,
with a focus on orthopaedics and trauma.
Primarily raised by his Anglo-German Grandparents, his interest in history and ceremonial was
sparked by his Grandparent's stories of family life in inter-war Central Europe and the post-war
Colonial Civil Service. This sparked a life long passion for the intricacies of precedence, forms
of address and ceremonial protocol. He consolidated and expanded upon this knowledge
whilst he worked as a protocol advisor for various Australian Government departments
including the Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.
He also served as a Master of Ceremonies for the Archdiocese of Melbourne, responsible for
organising major State, Diplomatic and Religious events. He has also completed his training as
a reserve soldier in the British Army and he has nurtured a keen interest in the military.
His work with Debrett’s includes training and advising business clients, acting as assistant to the
editor of the Peerage and he is co-host of the Debrett’s podcast. These varied roles allow him
to share his knowledge of and abiding interest in Royalty, Nobility, Church, Military, State and
the point at which they intersect.
In his spare time Hugo enjoys theatre, opera, is an amateur pianist and he divides his time
between London, Suffolk and the Cotswolds.
